THERE'S SO MUCH YOU CAN DO FOR SPORTS INJURIES AT HOME!

NO ONE TAKES BETTER CARE OF YOUR KIDS THAN YOU!

It may seem like your athlete is never home. Between school and practice (and time spent getting to and from practice …) the majority of the day is gone, right? But when your athlete gets injured, how much time do they spend somewhere taking care of it? The training room, the PT clinic, the docs office …

… Maybe the answer is NONE. Perhaps your athlete doesn’t have access to a Certified Athletic Trainer …. Perhaps the injury isn’t severe enough to warrant taking them to a medical professional …. Maybe you’re not sure if it’s bad enough to take them somewhere, and you hope it will just feel better in a few days …. Or maybe it just costs too much to take them somewhere …. So the athlete and you go HOME.

… Maybe the answer is A FEW HOURS of the week (and those are some pricey hours). The Certified Athletic Trainer, the Physical Therapist, the Doctor – they’re going to do their (important) bit, but then guess what? The athlete and you go HOME.

Whether you seek out professional medical care for your athlete’s injury or not, the fact is that your athlete doesn’t live at the training room, the Docs office, or the PT clinic. They live at HOME.

Sports injuries – big or small, majorly disruptive or just kind of nagging, need specific and consistent care – especially in the first 24-72 hours – in order to heal properly and not become problematic in the long term, as well as allow a return to high performance as quickly as possible. So – parents and athletes need to learn what to do at home, and then be diligent about it.

For parents, knowing if it’s really necessary to take your athlete to seek out medical care right away can relieve a lot of stress. Knowing what is best to do at home empowers you to make a huge difference in your athlete’s immediate injury situation as well as their longer term prognosis. Taking concrete steps that truly help, relieves pain and limits the extent of injury, taking your stress and worry with them.

For the athlete, a parent who is confident about what to do makes a big difference in their mental state. Being injured is hard in a lot of ways, and a parent’s stress and worry over where to go and what to do and how much it all will cost compounds the problem. They may try to minimize their pain and shrug it off. Knowing there are concrete steps to take that will help the situation lifts their spirits a bit, and when they see and feel the progress, it lifts them to a whole new level.

When athletes learn what to do for an injury, and experience the difference good injury care makes, they will be able to help themselves and others in the future! Well, a parent can always hope, right?
